Retiring as track & cross country coach,

Dennis Cullen leaves a rich legacy

In Dennis Cullen's 39 years as Durham Academy's varsity track and cross country coach, the programs have notched 39 state team championships, and 196 individual state champions have worn the Cavalier uniform. But while Cullen loves to see his athletes win, that's not what drives him, say those who have competed under his tutelage — rather, he's most interested in the journey that gets students to the finish line, and where they go afterward. When the 2015 track and field season comes to a close in May, Cullen will hang up his timer and whistle, retiring from his coaching duties. Read More

Magnificent 7 awards recognize

Upper Schoolers' character

In a popular op-ed piece, New York Times columnist David Brooks recently mused that there are "two sets of virtues, the résumé virtues and the eulogy virtues." While "résumé virtues" are certainly celebrated at Durham Academy, "eulogy virtues" are as well — most publicly at the annual Upper School "Magnificent 7" awards assembly, which recognizes community members for traits like honesty, courage and generosity. At the 2015 assembly, held Tuesday, eight students and two faculty/staff members were honored in an event filled with emotion and sincerity. Read More

Terrific books at fantastic prices — that can only mean DA’s annual Used Book Sale is open for business in the Middle School gym. More than 14,000 books were donated to the sale, from children’s board books and teen series to adult fiction and “coffee table books.” The Used Book Sale is a Parents Association fundraiser.

Third-graders take 'GrandFriends'

on an American experience tour

Durham Academy's Lower School was abuzz with activity April 17, as 350 grandparents and friends from as far away as China, Russia, Israel and Poland got a window into the world of the third grade's year-long study of the United States. The third grade Celebration of Our Nation kicked off with a performance in Brumley Performing Arts Building that was punctuated by ethnic and cultural songs and traditional folk dances and concluded with a display of each student's state project in the Lower School gym. Read More

Summer camp instructors donate

38 scholarships to EDCI families

Summer camps are a fun activity for children in many Durham Academy families, but that's not often the case for families living in a 120-block area east of downtown Durham. This summer, thanks to the generosity of DA Summer Programs instructors, 38 summer camp scholarships are being donated to families served by the East Durham Children's Initiative (EDCI). Read More

Eighth-graders dive into science

of barrier islands on trip

The eighth grade's recent trip to the North Carolina coast wasn't the sunbathing and swimming affair that many students might have previously associated with the ocean. Rather than swimsuits and floppy hats, they wore waders — and rather than whiling away the afternoon constructing sandcastles, they studied sea turtle habitats. In other words, the science-centric visit to Bogue Banks is even better than the typical beach trip, if you ask most students. Read More

Work up a sweat for a great

cause at May 1 Zumbathon

The event, set for 6 to 8 p.m. on the Upper School quad, will support WISER, or Women's Institute of Secondary Education and Research, which is a community development organization that aims to change the lives of girls in Muhuru Bay, Kenya, through education and health. Read More
