DA community rallies around injured

basketball players and their families

When they take the court Friday night, you'll see a changed varsity boys basketball team. In less than a week, this group of young men has been through an experience that has galvanized what was already a team into a family. The car accident on Jan. 9 left team members Cam Brown and Alston Thompson sidelined with serious injuries and Ryan Hester hospitalized, and it prompted a wave of support from the Durham Academy community that has been heartwarming to witness. Read More

Carlton zum Brunnen is the new

king of the Middle School Geo Bee

Carlton zum Brunnen didn't do much to study — not deliberately, anyway — for Durham Academy Middle School's National Geographic Bee. But while he may not have realized it at the time, he'd been preparing for the geography competition for years.

"There's not much you can do to prepare for the bee," the seventh-grader explained. "But I love reading National Geographic, and I enjoy learning about geography." Read More

Stop Hunger Now effort still

needs $1,500 for Monday's event

Members of the Durham Academy community will honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by packaging meals for Stop Hunger Now on Monday, a day when school is closed for the MLK Jr. holiday. More than 150 students, family members, faculty, staff and alumni have signed up to help, but the meal-packaging effort is about $1,500 short of its fundraising goal.

The meal-packaging event allows DA families to participate in assembling meals of rice, dehydrated vegetables, protein powder and vitamins that will be sent to famine-stricken areas of the world. Read More

Jan. 24 WISER A Cappella Jam

promises to be 'bigger than ever'

Having outgrown Kenan Auditorium a year ago, Durham Academy's eighth annual WISER A Cappella Jam will rock downtown Durham's Carolina Theatre with the sweet sound of unaccompanied voices on Jan. 24. Hosted by DA's two a cappella groups — the 50-plus-member Acapocalypse and the award-winning XIV Hours — and joined by six other local and national groups, the jam will be "bigger than ever," said Upper School music teacher Michael Meyer. Read More

DA will upgrade system for

weather notifications on Friday

Durham Academy is upgrading its Blackboard Connect emergency notification system to an advanced text-messaging platform. Blackboard Connect is the system DA will use to contact you in the event of a school emergency, as well as for weather-related school delays, cancellations or early dismissals. The upgrade will ensure a better receive rate for these text messages.

DA will switch to this advanced text messaging system on Friday, Jan. 16, around 4 p.m. When the upgrade is activated, everyone with a cell phone listed in the database will automatically receive a confirmation text from 23177 or 63079. Read More

American Immigration Council

chief discusses lessons from MLK

Speaking at Durham Academy Upper School's annual Martin Luther King assembly on Thursday, Ben Johnson — executive director of the American Immigration Council — said it's dangerous to try to draw direct parallels from the Civil Rights Movement to the state of immigration in the U.S. today. But taking a step back from the severity of those injustices fought 50 years ago, lessons can be gleaned on a big-picture scale, he said. Read More
