Assemblies bring Jackie Robinson's

story to life for LS and MS students

Born into a family of sharecroppers in rural Georgia, Jackie Robinson may have seemed an unlikely candidate to break baseball's color line — but 28 years later, he became the first African-American player in Major League Basball. Actor and playwright Mike Wiley brought Robinson's remarkable story to life for Durham Academy Lower and Middle School students at a pair of assemblies Wednesday.

Wearing a 1940s-era Brooklyn Dodgers uniform bearing the iconic number "42," Wiley alternated between sharing Robinson's story from a first-person perspective to telling the stories of other African-American athletes who broke the color barriers in their respective sports.

on weather-related changes

The early arctic blast of 2015 prompted Durham Academy to make our community aware of a new feature for staying in the loop about weather-related school delays, cancellations or early dismissals. This year, you will receive initial notification via email and text thanks to DA's Blackboard Connect alert system. DA will perform a test of the weather alert system on Friday, Jan. 9, at 4:30 p.m. Read More

Varsity hoops teams find

success on court over break

While the winter break brought some much-deserved down time for athletes, coaches, students and parents, both varsity basketball teams managed to stay busy on the court for holiday tournament action.

To kick off the break, the boys team traveled to Myrtle Beach to play in the Panther Classic at Myrtle Beach High School. We advanced to the championship game by beating Myrtle Beach High School and Mount Paran Christian School, and then lost the title game by a mere 8 points to Darlington School. Junior Ryan Hester was named to the all-tournament team. Read More

As the weather has cooled, Cavs have been heating up the basketball court in unprecedented fashion, with three players passing Durham Academy’s 1,000-career-point mark in a month's time: Liz Roberts, Alston Thompson and Cha'Mia Rothwell.

Roberts, a junior, reached the milestone Nov. 27 in a game vs. Voyager Academy. Thompson, a senior, was right on her heels, reaching 1,000 points Dec. 6 vs. Providence Day School. Rothwell, a junior, joined the 1,000-point club Dec. 27 vs. Cardinal Gibbons High School. Read More

Strategic plan work identifies

key issues for DA's future

Starting tonight, a group of 57 parents, faculty, administrators, alumni, parents of alumni and trustees will participate in a two-day strategic planning retreat, facilitated by Dan Baum, executive director of the Redwoods Group Foundation.

The goal of the retreat is to produce a draft document defining the priorities and goals of the strategic plan (what Durham Academy is going to do over the next three to five years); the rationales behind the goals (the reasons why DA is tackling these particular goals); and action steps outlining how DA will achieve those goals. Read More

in extemp 'Super Bowl'

Only the top 16 extemporaneous speaking competitors in the country are invited to compete in Montgomery Bell Academy's round robin. Durham Academy senior Eitan Sapiro-Gheiler was not only among them, but he placed second in the prestigious exhibition round.

“This result confirms Eitan as one of the top extempers in America this year,” said DA speech and debate coach Robert Sheard. “I am so proud of him.” Sheard described the competition — held Jan. 2-4 in Nashville, Tenn. —  as "the Super Bowl of extemp." Read More
