| Jordan's national girls soccer team visits DA on empowerment-focused U.S. tour Sitting in the lobby of Durham Academy's Kirby Gym — surrounded by trophies and photos celebrating the accomplishments of female athletes — Tasneem Abu Al-Rob, a 14-year-old soccer player from Jordan, said she felt inspired. She and 13 other athletes who are expected to compete with Jordan's national 2016 U17 team were at DA as part of an athletics-focused cultural tour of the U.S., during which they've gleaned lots of lessons on the value of female empowerment. "We have learned how the people think here and how that is different from how we think," Al-Rob said. "I think that here they are really interested in sports and young people who play sports. | Students, faculty share in the spirit of giving with the local community As Maddy Samet's family discussed their holiday shopping plans over Thanksgiving break, their attention turned to what the Durham Academy junior hoped to see under the tree. A new pair of boots? The latest iPad or a new phone? No, she told her parents, she "just wanted to help someone this holiday season." Samet, her classmates and faculty banded together to collect gifts for 55 people in need through the Upper School's Share Your Holiday Spirit program.
