Skype session brings NASA scientist

into Lower School students' orbit

If Durham Academy students want to visit Mars, there's a good possibility that wish could become a reality. Dr. Ellen Stofan, chief scientist with NASA, spent an hour "Skyping" with DA students on Nov. 25, and she told them they are at the right age to one day become astronauts on NASA's mission to Mars, a mission that's expected to take place 15 to 20 years from now.

Demetra Kontos, teaching assistant in Lower School science, arranged for the Skype session with Stofan, who is a friend and sorority sister from their undergraduate days at The College of William & Mary.

Lower School, Upper School

students' new partnership for Stop

Hunger Now

What does it feel like when you’re hungry? Does your stomach hurt or your head ache? Is it hard to concentrate in school when your stomach is growling?

Those were questions Lower School students were asked Wednesday morning as part of an awareness effort by the Upper School’s Stop Hunger Now club. Upper school club members joined Lower School students in a first-time partnership to write letters and cards that will be included in packaged meals as part of Durham Academy’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service on Jan. 19. This will be the sixth year that the DA community has held a meal-packaging event on the day school is closed to commemorate the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. Read More

Fourth-grade 'Real Time Radio

Show' is back for a new season

The wildly popular podcast Serial isn’t the first radio-format show to have listeners counting the days until the next episode’s release. Durham Academy students have been doing it for years with their own radio saga, The Real Time Radio Show, and loyal Radio Show listeners will be pleased to hear that this year’s season premiere has just been released.

“Winner Takes It All” – a yarn spun entirely from the imaginations of DA fourth-graders – chronicles the adventures of three teams competing in “a fast-paced race in the tropical land of Fiji.” The title of the season refers to the lifetime supply of pizza awaiting the victor of a “labyrinth of lies.” Read More
