'Caring about lemurs to save lemurs' on 

Lower Schoolers' visit to Duke center

First-graders were bubbling with excitement Tuesday morning as they climbed aboard Durham Academy buses for a 10-minute drive to the Duke Lemur Center. Over the next three weeks, every Lower School student will tour the center in preparation for a February visit by guest author Richard Sobol. Lemurs don’t like cold weather, so the tours are taking place while the weather is still warm. 

As the buses drove down Erwin Road, first-graders were encouraged to think about the stories they see at the Lemur Center. “Keep your eyes, ears and hearts open. All those will help you tell a story,” said Lower School librarian Michelle Rosen, who heads up the Lower School’s guest author program. Read More

 
             
 

Turkey Trot registration is open

With registration open for the Nov. 15 Turkey Trot 5K and Fun Run, it's time to lace up those running shoes! Now in its fifth year, this celebration of community and physical activity has quickly become a ritual of fall at Durham Academy. For the first time, this year's 5K will feature chip timing and immediate race results. Read More

 

Volunteer Center honors 72 DA

students for community service

Durham Academy students made up more than one-third of the youths who earned Hard Corps Awards and 22 percent of those who earned Mayor's Awards — both in recognition of outstanding community service records — at the Volunteer Center of Durham's Tomorrow's Community Leaders ceremony Sept. 30. Read More

 

First official appearance in Pride

parade a celebration of inclusion

Marching with thousands of fellow LGBTQ advocates through Duke University's East Campus was "an amazing experience," Durham Academy senior Ralitsa Kalfas said after DA's first official appearance in the N.C. Pride Festival parade on Sept. 27.

"Meeting the wonderful people in the parade reinforces the welcoming and tolerant environment that we strive for in our community," she said. "I believe that these kinds of experiences strengthen our community and encourage an empathetic mentality." Read More

 

Recipes needed for DA cookbook

Durham Academy Parents Association is working to publish the first-ever DA cookbook, and the school's community of cooks is being called on for a critical ingredient — recipes! 

Parents, students, faculty and staff are asked to contribute favorite recipes by Tuesday, Nov. 25. Suggestions include favorite libations, party punches and smoothies; appetizers and party dishes; soups and salads; breads and rolls; go-to entrees, casseroles and main dishes; sides and vegetables; and decadent desserts. Read More

 

Dance Club hair extension event

raises nearly $650 for Komen

The streaks of pink peeking from the locks of Durham Academy students, faculty, staff and parents during the month of October don't just signal the latest salon trend; rather, they are symbols of the wearers' commitment to the fight against breast cancer. The Upper School Dance Club raised nearly $650 for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation through its third annual hair extension fundraiser. Read More
