DA seniors earn Morehead-Cain, Park

and Robertson scholarship nominations

The Durham Academy Upper School faculty has nominated six members of the Class of 2016 for three prestigious scholarships at area universities.

Accepting nominations for UNC-Chapel Hill's Morehead-Cain Scholarship are Abe Dunderdale and Veronica Kim; for N.C. State University's Park Scholarship are Caroline Ghio and Rasika Rao; and for Duke University and UNC Chapel Hill's Robertson Scholars Leadership Program are Alexandra Kadis and Kiran Nagar.

Examining the impact of Latinos/as

on America's future — and history 

Why should we take time to observe Hispanic Heritage Month and prioritize Latino/a studies? Well, for starters, there's the fact that as of July 2014, Latinos/as comprised 17 percent of America's population. And there's the projection that by the year 2060, Hispanics will make up more than 30 percent of the nation's population. But — as María DeGuzmán told students at the Upper School's Hispanic Heritage Month assembly on Thursday — Latinos/as aren't just a part of America's present and future; they've also played a major role in American history, dating back to the Spaniards who in the 16th century led expeditions along what is now the southeastern U.S. coast. Read More 


Faculty Spolight: PS and LS 

P.E. teacher Beth Roberts

Beth Roberts loves teaching physical education, but don't look for her at the Preschool or Lower School on Friday. She'll be taking a well-deserved day off to spend time with her husband, Brandon, whom she hasn't seen since late January. Brandon returned Thursday morning after serving with the U.S. Army in Iraq. The couple had been married for just eight months when Brandon deployed to train Iraqi troops, and his return comes a month earlier than expected.

The fall athletic season is reaching the halfway point, with athletes and coaches hard at work. Varsity teams are beginning the tough TISAC (Triangle Independent Schools Athletic Conference) portion of their schedules, and all teams are into a weekly routine. Read More
