Middle School, Upper School students take to the great outdoors

School is in session, but more than half of Durham Academy’s students are taking their curriculum on the road this week. Students in grades five through 12 embarked on outdoor, overnight excursions during the second week of the school year. These trips – from destinations as far away as Georgia and Alabama, to wilderness areas in the North Carolina mountains and as close as Falls Lake – are part of the experiential education program that is a hallmark of the Durham Academy experience. They are often among students’ most memorable experiences at DA. Read More


Summer grants fuel faculty professional development 

Every summer, as students leave Durham Academy to spend time with family at the pool or the beach, at camp or crossing the country on a trip, relaxing at home or working a summer job, DA faculty embark on adventures of their own. Fueled by DA’s generous summer grant program, between eight and 11 faculty members teachers are selected each year to engage in summer activities with financial support from the school. Read More

Spotlight on Faculty: Preschool Art & Cooking teacher Elizabeth Lyle 

Preschool art teacher Elizabeth Lyle practices what she teaches. She has loved making art since she was a child, carrying a trunk packed with art supplies with her as her family moved from Texas to New Jersey, Maryland and Northern Virginia.

 She says moving frequently – her dad worked for Ford Motor Company and she attended seven schools from preschool to high school – “informed me, made me who I am … We were always new, the summers were long and I spent a lot of time at home. I was always making stuff.” Read More
