Patrick Nevins '03 for teaching, service

Barb Kanoy Patrick Nevins

Patrick Nevins — a 2003 Durham Academy graduate who served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps and launched a nonprofit to support fellow veterans — and Barb Kanoy — who has ignited a passion for science in DA Middle Schoolers since 1982 — have been honored with DA's Alumni Service Award and Faculty & Staff Legacy Award, respectively. The awards were presented by the DA Alumni Board at the April 15 Spring Alumni Reception.

Harvard professor: How to go from

good to great? Ask the students

Dr. Richard Light

As the Durham Academy community continues to work toward fulfilling the goals set forth in the 2015 Strategic Plan — a more cohesive and collaborative learning experience, a broader experience of diversity and strengthened connections with the broader community, to name a few — there are lots of voices to be heard along the way. And chief among them, Dr. Richard Light suggested to faculty and staff this week, should be students. Light, a professor of education and public policy at Harvard University, spoke at DA's April 18 professional development day, explaining how the Ivy League university has systematically used student feedback over the past two decades to make meaningful, data-supported improvements. Read More

Faculty Spotlight: Upper School

biology teacher William Edwards

William Edwards

William Edwards is shaped by a deep sense of family, a love of nature and a spirit of inquisitiveness, and all three happily converge in his life as a teacher.

Edwards’ extended family encompasses the villagers he worked with in the Peace Corps in the 1980s and the students he teaches at Durham Academy. His “great outdoors” extends from Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula (and a summer job salmon fishing) to North Carolina’s Black Mountains and Linville Gorge (and DA’s Senior Challenge with his senior advisory). His spirit of inquisitiveness led him to pursue an apprenticeship with a log cabin builder, and DA’s culture of inquisitiveness keeps him curious even as a veteran teacher. Read More
