| 'Your turn to fill the stitches': Partnership with Urban Ministries of Durham grows The nine-month stretch from February through October can be dangerously bare-shelved for the Urban Ministries of Durham food pantry. The bounty of cans and boxes collected during holiday food drives has dwindled. Yet the need only grows, as winter weather keeps children out of school — and away from the nourishment of school-provided meals. Sometimes, the wooden shelves of the pantry are completely empty. So when a group of Durham Academy Upper Schoolers hauled in 452 pounds of canned and dried foods on Wednesday, the delight and relief on the face of Gin Jackson, UMD's director of community engagement, was plain to see. | Lower School Service Club pays it forward to community partners What if you couldn't afford to buy the clothes your children needed for school? This winter, the Lower School Service Club focused their efforts on students their own age, collecting new and gently used jackets, pants and tops, underwear and socks for children in need in Durham. The clothing drive for Urban Ministries of Durham is the latest project for a group of Durham Academy third-and fourth-graders, who meet monthly to help others, and who give back all year long. Faculty Spotlight: Middle School dean, math teacher Robert Wilson Robert Wilson was teacher of the year for Durham Public Schools in 1989-1990 and he received Durham Academy’s Hershey Distinguished Faculty Award in 2000. But that doesn’t begin to compare with the honor he felt when a DA student chose to write about him for the sixth grade’s annual My Hero project. That happened not once but three times — in 2013, 2014 and 2015 — and Wilson proudly displays the colorful “My Hero” books on his office bookcase. Read More
