| DA Make-A-Wish Club makes child's dream of attending Daytona 500 a reality About five minutes from Durham Academy's Upper School campus lives Howell Brown, a 12-year-old boy who loves racecars. When he talks about the sound of them speeding around the track, and the excitement of seeing his favorite driver in action, his eyes twinkle with such joy that it's easy to forget he's been battling cancer for three years. So when members of DA's Make-A-Wish Club heard about Howell's passion for racing and his "one true wish" to attend the Daytona 500, they knew they had to do what they could to help make their neighbor's dream a reality. | National Merit names 17 seniors finalists in scholarship competition The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has recognized 17 Durham Academy seniors as finalists in the 61st annual National Merit Scholarship Program. DA's finalist pool is larger than any in at least the last five years, and is among of the largest in school history. Read More
Faculty Spotlight: Lower School tech coordinator Michele Gutierrez When Michele Gutierrez was in first grade, she had a feeling that she wanted to be a teacher one day — not because she enjoyed school so much, but because she didn’t want other kids to feel the way she felt in school. “School was really hard for me because none of it clicked in my brain. My eyes didn’t process words the way they were supposed to. … From kindergarten to seventh grade, when most kids are sailing through, was agony for me.” Read More Athletic Director's Update: A terrific winter season ends The winter athletics season officially ended on Monday, with 26 DA swimmers qualifying for a very competitive NCISAA swim meet. It was a season that also saw incredible efforts by the basketball teams, highlighted by senior Liz Roberts becoming DA's all-time leading points scorer with a career 1,935 points.
