| Morning mindfulness sessions help Middle Schoolers, faculty find focus Stumble into Durham Academy's Taylor Hall on a Wednesday morning before the start of school, and you might be surprised by what you see: students and faculty sitting quietly upon yoga mats, or walking slowly around the auditorium. The scene is in stark contrast to the hustle and bustle that you might see elsewhere at that early hour — and that's the point of the Middle School's morning mindfulness sessions. | Chinese exchange students share culture, forge friendships at DA Traditionally, the way a quarter of the world’s population celebrates one of the biggest Asian holidays of the year is to go home to their families, take a week or more off from school, and, if they own a business, close up shop for the Chinese New Year. Over the last two weeks, Durham Academy has hosted seven Chinese students, helping to create a home away from home as they celebrated their traditions nearly 7,000 miles away. Read More
Faculty Spotlight: Middle School language arts teacher Kelly Howes It’s not surprising that Kelly Howes brings a global view to her language arts classroom at the Middle School. She lived on five continents and taught school in Mozambique, Nigeria, Taiwan, Portugal and Argentina before arriving at Durham Academy five years ago. Howes grew up in a family that moved often. Her dad took jobs in different places across the Midwest, and her mother was always up for it, gamely moving five kids from Michigan to Illinois to Minnesota and back to Michigan.
