Students, teachers, families tackle hunger

at annual MLK Day meal-packaging event

“We lose about 20,000 people a day to hunger-related issues. Have you ever been to see the Carolina Hurricanes? If you fill up the PNC Arena, they don’t come out at the end. That’s what we’re here to fix, and we will do it in our lifetime.”

The morning started with a wake-up call for Durham Academy’s 150 volunteers, but John Lewis of Raleigh-based hunger-relief organization Stop Hunger Now knew he had to put the day's work in perspective. The good news is over the last 10 years, meal-packaging events organized by the nonprofit have reduced the number of food-insecure people in the world by about 100 million people. The bad news is there are still 795 million people worldwide who are food insecure. Read More

our common thread: humanity


The imagery is striking. Each person stands motionless, his or her eyes fixed on the viewer. Meanwhile, the world is whizzing by — other people in the frame a blur of motion, seemingly oblivious to the battle that each photo's subject faces as a result of stereotypes. But, we, the viewer, are given a clue: a placard reminding us that behind religion, skin tone, sexual orientation, ability, nationality, gender and the like, there is something so much more important — a person. Read More

Doreen Johnson

Doreen Johnson remembers watching with envy as her brothers and sisters did their homework around a giant table in the family kitchen. The eighth child in a family of nine, Johnson "couldn't wait until I had homework. I always loved school."  

That love of school came directly from her parents, and doing well in school was important for Johnson, her five sisters and three brothers. Read More
