Flying high on Middle School successes,

Ultimate expands to Upper School 

Ultimate Frisbee

On most athletic teams, sportsmanship is important. But in Ultimate Frisbee, it's a bona fide rule-book requirement. With no referees to intervene or make calls, players' honesty and respect for one another are paramount and are part of what's encapsulated in the phrase "Spirit of the Game." 

That emphasis on character is a big part of why the sport has so caught on at Durham Academy — after four years of wildly popular Middle School teams, DA is fielding its first-ever Upper School Ultimate team. Read More

 
             
 

Senior Meredith Cox is semifinalist

in Intel Science Talent Search

Where the average person might appreciate the mere warmth of sand between their toes, the aroma of ground coffee or the complexion-boosting magic of makeup powder, Durham Academy senior Meredith Cox sees so much more. Already an accomplished scientist, the 17-year-old has a deep interest in such granular particles, and she spends a great deal of time learning why they behave the way they do. And now, in recognition of her research, she has been named a semifinalist in the Intel Science Talent Search, the nation's oldest high school science competition. Read More

Denise Shaw

When Denise Shaw changed careers and went back to school for a master’s in education, she had to make up two courses she hadn’t taken as an undergraduate, economics and physical education. Economics was no problem but physical education was a challenge, and Shaw credits that PE class for giving her “my most important lesson in teaching.” Read More
