With boundless knowledge of her subject matter, she knows the AP exam “like the back of her hand,” says one student. She’s ever willing to try something new, says a colleague. | Checkmate: Historic times for top-ranked DA chess program The last 12 years have seen the rise of new state (and sometimes national) champions and the passing of milestones in Durham Academy's chess program, and 2015 will go down as the year of two particularly historic moments: the 100th chess tournament hosted by DA, and the crowning of a new school individual rating record-holder, sophomore Eric Bradford. Faculty Spotlight: Kindergarten teacher Jessica Whilden '00 When kindergarten classmates came to Jessica Crowe’s house for a play date, they always knew they would be playing “school” because that’s all she ever wanted to do. She caught the teaching bug in 1986 when her brother entered Sheppy Vann’s kindergarten class at Durham Academy. All she wanted to do was go to school with him, and she got her chance the following year when it was her turn to be in Vann’s class. Now, 28 years later, Jessica Crowe Whilden '00 is where she wants to be (at Durham Academy) and doing what she wants to do (teaching kindergarten).
