| Video pen pal program connects students with new classmates around the globe The lights were dimmed, and silence filled the classroom. Ten Durham Academy Middle Schoolers, gathered for their club period, had their eyes fixed to the projector screen at the front of the room, and nervous excitement hung heavy in the air. | New ideas & new moves: Students broaden horizons at Mix-It-Up Day At first glance, it appears to be a typical weekday morning on the Durham Academy Upper School campus. But then the rhythm of salsa music emanating from a language classroom piques your interest, and, through the window, you spy silhouettes dancing inside. A couple of doors down, a discussion about LGBTQ superheroes has drawn such a crowd that the door hangs open. In classrooms all over campus, freshmen sit beside seniors, enraptured in candid discussions led by fellow students, guests and faculty. Faculty Spotlight: Fourth grade teacher Tom Barry After 15 years as a commodities trader, Tom Barry had pretty good instincts when it came to managing risk. In 2005 he took a huge one — transitioning from trading oil, gas and electricity for Fortune 500 companies to a job teaching Durham Academy fourth-graders. Now instead of trading the building blocks of the global economy, his commodity is his beloved students, and he's fully invested in their transition from Lower School to Middle School.
