Upper School launches new leadership

seminar with Fuqua leadership center

Good leaders never stop learning. At their annual retreat this spring, Durham Academy's Upper School administrative team realized that the only way to ensure continuity in student leadership was to start growing leaders intentionally.

Last Wednesday, 25 DA seniors attended their first leadership workshop courtesy of Sanyin Siang, the executive director of the Fuqua/Coach K Center for Leadership and Ethics at Duke (COLE), and two of her COLE fellows. Siang and Upper School Dean of Girls Lindy Frasher worked together to develop the fall seminar. Read More

Middle School gardeners grow

hopes for winning $5,000 grant

The Durham Academy Middle School gardens are the literal fruits of countless hours of labor by dedicated students, faculty, staff and parents — and they are enjoyed by all of the DA community as centers of natural beauty, and sometimes even sources of healthy snacks. But you don't have to have a green thumb to help the garden's efforts — in fact, all you need are your keyboarding fingers. The Middle School gardens are in the running for a $5,000 grant as part of Discovery Education's Let it Grow Contest, and you can help DA win with just a couple of clicks a day. Read More

Faculty Spotlight: Middle School

history teacher, coach Virginia Hall

When Virginia Reves came to Durham Academy as a sixth-grader in 1984, she was not happy to be here. The 11-year-old had left friends and her much-loved Highlands Day School behind in Birmingham, Alabama, and she was mad at her dad for necessitating a move to Durham when he accepted a job at Duke.

Gail Walker — a sixth-grade language arts teacher with a quick smile, a ready laugh and a sunny disposition — quickly turned things around, introducing young Virginia to a classmate who’s still a good friend and making her feel like she belonged. Walker knew Virginia was a swimmer and thought she’d enjoy getting to know another swimmer who was also new to DA. Read More
