Winter sports look for strong finish
2/1/2012
By Steve Engebretsen
Director of Athletics

The winter season is entering its final weeks, so the focus is on finishing strong and possible tournament bids.

Both varsity basketball teams are finding the going tough at times, but our players continue to play hard and both have had some exciting and successful contests so far. The boys, battling a brutal schedule of top opponents, have won five games since the winter break, including a victory over a quality, crosstown rival Cresset team on a buzzer-beater by senior Sammy Hobgood. The shot was in the air as the horn sounded ... when it swished through DA came away with a two- point victory! [Click here to watch video of the game-winning shot.] The boys continue to be led by Hobgood, fellow seniors Noah Tulsky, Vinnie Corwin and Justin Lawson, and sophomores Nash Carey-Ewand, Khari Williams and Slater Daniels, who are getting valuable experience in our tough league.

Basketball and swimming seasons are well underway, with Upper School teams getting a few games under their belts before the Thanksgiving break.  The varsity swim teams are large; we have more kids on the roster than we've had in several years.  While it's a mixture of beginners and veterans, hopes are high.  We started the season with a boys victory over Ravenscroft while the girls fell just short of winning the meet.

Parking for DA athletic events
8/25/2011
Now that the school year is underway, parking in the Upper School gym lot is even more congested than usual due to construction on campus.  Steve Engebretsen, director of athletics, asks that parents be careful and be quick when picking up students from athletic practices at the Upper School.

The US tennis courts, track and soccer field can be reached via a pedestrian walkway from the US gym lot.  The walkway is located between the parking lot and the wooded area behind the tennis courts.

Yesterday produced one of the most exciting moments of the spring season!
4/15/2011
While to many of you, yesterday was a pretty day in April and a Thursday that meant the weekend is getting closer . . . it also produced one of Durham Academy’s most exciting athletic moments of the spring season!

After trailing 3-7 with about nine minutes to play, DA varsity girls lacrosse outscored Cape Fear Academy 6-1 to win the game 9-8! Not only that, a perfect pass from Elizabeth Eason allowed Mariel Murray to score the game winner with 1.9 seconds to go!!

Other notables of the spring so far include:
  • DA varsity girls soccer being undefeated at 9-0-1 so far
  • Varsity baseball being atop the TISAC standings (4-1) at this point, with four tough games remaining
  • Varsity tennis looking like a final four team with a 10-2 record
  • Golfers working their way back into contention for a state tournament bid
  • Varsity track relying on our outstanding distance runners and good depth to be at or near the top in the TISAC and NCISAA. Plus, DA has our first ever pole vaulter – Kristin Sundy is pole vaulting and doing pretty well.
  • 55 of our 90 seniors are on varsity rosters this spring!

– Steve Engebretsen, Director of Athletics

Basketball and swim season going strong!
1/5/2011

By Steve Engebretsen

Director of Athletics

The months of November and December were spent with basketball players and swimmers training and getting their seasons underway.  Durham Academy has 98 boys and girls playing on basketball teams and a roster of 40 on a boys/girls swim team.  Winter is the least active sports season in terms of the number of participants, but we have many students competing!

The holidays are a short break in the daily athletics schedule, but game nights and swim meets come frequently once we return to school.  The swim team has moved its practice site from Campus Hills to Duke for the remainder of the season.  While this is an inconvenient interruption, training continues with the state meet as the prize at the end of the season.  Both girls and boys varsity basketball teams played in holiday tournaments and return with important conference games ahead.  Each Middle School basketball team got off to a great start before break and each hopes to recapture their momentum upon returning to school in January.

It's still basketball and swimming season, but spring start dates are already set
12/8/2010

By Steve Engebretsen

Director of Athletics

As we move further into the winter weather, basketball and swimming seasons are well under way. Both varsity basketball teams are 3-0 at this point, with several tough and important games looming before winter break.

Our girls and boys varsity basketball teams will compete in the Cary Academy Holiday Tournament on December 20, 21, 22. Each Middle School basketball team will play several games before winter break, but the bulk of those seasons will come after the break. Our swim teams have two meets under their belt, and with high numbers and lots of enthusiasm they are looking forward to a strong season. I encourage everyone to check the schedules at www.da.org/athletics and come watch the Cavaliers play or swim!

While summer seems long ago, it’s hard to believe we’ve only about three more weeks of heavy fall sports action.  Each varsity team is busy positioning themselves for possible state tournament bids and trying to stay healthy and peak at the right time.  Injuries and a stop-and-start school calendar are challenges, but all teams are looking to finish strong.  Each of our Middle School and JV teams have winning records, and are also working toward successful seasons.  We’ll have season re-caps in the next News & Notes.

DA boys are City-County Cross Country champs;
Senior Fred Ward is top finisher, setting a meet record

10/6/2010

Durham Academy’s boys cross country team won its fourth straight Durham City-County Championship on Wednesday, with senior Fred Ward claiming top spot among all runners.  It was the second time in three years that Fred has won the city-county meet, setting a meet record 16:00 for the 5K course at DA!

DA’s Carl Ward came in third with 16:34, Michael Cunningham was seventh and David Bradley was ninth.  The DA boys team tied for first place with N.C. School of Science and Math, but Jimmy Mosca finished 20th, two places ahead of the next Science and Math runner, giving DA the tie breaker.  The Science and Math team is coached by Nick Lehman, a 2001 DA graduate and the city-county champ in 2000.

You can read full coverage of the Durham City-County Cross Country Championship in The Herald-Sun.

And from veteran DA Cross Country Coach Dennis Cullen, a coach’s eye view of the Durham City-County Meet:

The boys won the City-County Cross Country Meet; the girls finished fifth.

Fred Ward won the individual race with a time of 16:00.  This is a new meet record.  DA has hosted the meet every year since 1979, so it is fair to say that no Durham runner has ever run faster in this meet.  Fred also won this meet in 2008.  He has won the 3200 at the state track meet in 2008 and 2009.  He set the school record at 3200 meters at 9:26.4.

Obviously, Fred's time is also our school record, breaking the record of 16:17 set earlier this year by his twin brother, Carl.  Carl has our school record at 1600 meters, 4:17.8

The first five runners on the boys team (Fred, Carl, Michael Cunningham, David Bradley, Jack Lee) had an average time of 17:09.  This also established a new meet record.  It broke the record of 17:18 set by last year's DA team.

DA and the North Carolina School of Science and Math actually posted identical scores of 37 points.  In cross country, the places of the first five runners on each team are added together.  When a tie occurs, the place of the sixth runners breaks the tie.  In this case, DA's Jimmy Mosca finished a few places ahead of NCSSM's sixth runner, giving us the win.

Homecoming is October 15 – Don’t miss it!

DA athletes win an assortment of honors this summer
9/1/2010

By Steve Engebretsen

Athletics Director

The fields and courts are generally quiet at Durham Academy during the summer months.  There are several DA sports camps and routine summer maintenance, but it's not the bustling place that is it is during the school sports seasons.  Even though the summer months are a calm time for Durham Academy sports, many of our athletes continue to work hard and compete throughout the summer.

Coaches Tim McKenna and Costen Irons took over 30 boys to the team basketball camp at Catawba College, where DA’s varsity team went 13-2 and lost in the championship game. Coach Krista Gingrich and the DA varsity girls team competed in a summer league against top competition and went 5-5 for the summer season. Coaches Julian Cochran and Judy Chandler took boys soccer and field hockey groups to team camps to compete against teams from across the state. Senior Cody Crenshaw and sophomore Robin Blazing were winners of the Will-to-Win Award at UNC field hockey camp, and Robin was named an all-star at Duke field hockey camp. Cody also participated in the Futures Regional Tournament and the College Field Hockey Showcase in Virginia during the summer. Also in field hockey, junior Lauren Rogers was named to the South U16 regional team that will compete in the National Futures Tournament in 2011, and eighth grader Jordan Barry was named to the South U14 regional team and will compete in the national tournament next year. On the lacrosse field, senior Billy Haas was named an all-star at the Top 250 boys lacrosse camp.

Mollie Pathman is National Girls Soccer Player of the Year
5/28/2010

The national soccer spotlight shone brightly on Durham Academy May 26 when senior Mollie Pathman was named 2009-10 Gatorade National Girls Soccer Player of the Year.  The award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence, high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, and distinguishes Mollie as the nation’s best high school girls soccer player.

Mollie was taken completely by surprise when Olympic gold medalist and former UNC soccer star Cat Reddick Whitehill knocked on the door of a DA classroom, informed Mollie that she was the national player of the year and presented her with an impressive trophy.  A camera crew – ostensibly making a video for DA – captured Mollie’s surprise and the brief assembly that followed.  The applause of students and faculty made it clear that Mollie is a much-appreciated member of the DA community.

Spring sports are off and running!
3/1/2010

By Steve Engebretsen

Director of Athletics

One cannot tell by the small piles of snow still in the parking lots and mostly chilly temperatures, but the spring sports season is upon us. We already have hundreds of students on the fields, courts and track preparing for spring season action.

But we still have many winter sports accomplishments to report. The seventh grade girls basketball team completed an undefeated season earlier this month! Both Middle Schoool boys basketball teams had winning seasons against strong competition, and the eighth grade girls team also had a solid season. Both JV basketball teams were defeated in the semi-finals of their conference tournament, but had several late season big wins!

January brings lots of swimming and basketball action
1/1/2010

Steve Engebretsen
Athletic Director

As I write, things have slowed down for exams and winter break, which for winter athletes and coaches can be a time to catch up and rest for a time (after exams, of course). The winter sports season is off to a good start with each team having a couple of notches in the win column.

Our swim team is larger than ever. With some talented swimmers and lots of depth, the team is off to a strong start. Both girls and boys varsity basketball teams have some big wins over tough opponents and both teams will be playing over the holiday break. Senior captains Kylie Reeves and Jordan Lawson are leading the way.

When we return from holiday break, game action will be heavy for basketball and swimming.  Keep checking the schedules on www.da.org and come out and watch DA athletes compete!

Nearly 155 athletes competing on basketball, swim teams
12/1/2009

By Steve Engebretsen
Director of Athletics

Basketball and swimming seasons are now in full swing.  Durham Academy has eight basketball teams that include 105 students and a swim team roster of nearly 50!   So, even though the winter sports season is a bit quieter than fall or spring, we have high participation and loads of action.

As we begin a time of heavy game schedules, I’d like to remind parents that we expect and promote good sportsmanship at Durham Academy athletic events.  Please speak to your children about what this means and of its importance, and do your best to be a good model of sportsmanship at games.

Now that we are well into the school year, most class trips are complete and teams are able to get into the rythym of practices and games.  Our varsity teams are all off to solid starts and about to begin serious TISAC conference play.  Boys soccer, battling injuries and one of the strongest schedules ever for DA soccer is competing hard and after a win against Ravenscroft hoping to be a factor in the TISAC race and gain a possible bid to the state tournament.  Varsity girls tennis, with new coach Andy Pogach, is off to one of its best starts in recent years and also looking forward to positioning for possible state tournament play with several key conference matches ahead.  Varsity volleyball, also with new head coach Tania Stafford, has had several key wins already and looks to be an up-and-coming program at DA and also in the NCISAA.  The JV volleyball team is undefeated at this point in the season.  Boys and girls cross country, with large numbers and some talented runners both had solid performances in the DA Invitational (the boys finished 2nd behind Chapel Hill High School).  The boys are hoping to peak for a chance to repeat as NCISAA champions.  Varsity field hockey, while losing an early game to Charlotte Country Day will once again be considered a favorite to advance in the post season.

Durham Academy senior Adrianne Soo finished 10th in the Foot Locker South Regional Cross Country Meet held November 29 at McAlpine Park in Charlotte, qualifying for the national championship December 13 in San Diego, Calif.

Adrianne’s time of 17:39 was a particularly impressive accomplishment given the rainy, muddy conditions. She began the race cautiously, running in about 20th position for the first mile. She moved up gradually to 13th at the two mile point. Things became very difficult after that. She was still in 12th with only 600 meters to go, but unleashed a very strong kick to move into tenth.

By Steve Engebretsen
Director of Athletics

Today is the first official day of the end of the fall sports season! I want to thank all the coaches for their time and work. Also a special thanks goes to our parents, who have faithfully supported each team. As with any season we had successes and disappointments, but we had lots of great efforts and performances by Durham Academy athletes of all ages.

Durham Academy won two NCISAA state championships this fall! Our boys cross country team claimed the state championship on October 24 with an impressive showing in Cary to easily outdistance Cary Academy. Four runners earned all-state honors for finishing in the top 10 at the state meet: Fred Ward, second; Carl Ward, fourth; Worth Newman, sixth; and Erik Kraus, eighth. Equally as important for team scoring was the 13th place finish by Michael Cunningham. All five of these boys also earned all-conference honors a week earlier for their performance in the TISAC meet. This is Coach Dennis Cullen’s 16th state championship in boys cross country!
